As the relationship between fantasy sports and social media continues to evolve, hear from those who are on the cutting edge of connecting fantasy sports players through social games and social login.
Moderator: Jeff Ma
Jeffrey Ma was the co-founder of Citizen Sports, a revolutionary sports media company that used social media and emerging mobile platforms to disrupt the traditional sports media landscape. During his time with Citizen Sports, Ma worked with major media like Sports Illustrated and ESPN and large brands like Ford and Miller/Coors. In April of 2010, Citizen Sports was acquired by Yahoo and Ma moved on to his next challenge. Today, Ma shows companies how harnessing the power of these technology-driven platforms, using not only social media, but concrete data and numbers, can create incredible success. Whether sharing his personal experiences on the blackjack table or his consultations with sports executives and scouts, he shows how you can use math and media to make a positive difference in your organization.
Panelist: Patrick Salyer, Gigya, CEO
As chief executive officer, Patrick is responsible for Gigya’s overall business strategy and day-to-day operations. Patrick previously held the position of Vice President of Strategy and Operations at Gigya, driving retail product strategy and operations as well as strategic partnerships including relationships with the top social networks and identity providers including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo, Google and Microsoft. He was also instrumental in building and managing Gigya’s high-performing sales development organization. Patrick has also held positions at Gigya in business development and corporate sales, driving adoption of Gigya’s technology across more than 500,000 websites, and delivering some of Gigya’s lighthouse enterprise clients. Before joining Gigya, Patrick co-founded a suite of social network applications and games and served as Associate Consultant for L.E.K. Consulting, a strategy consulting firm. Patrick holds a bachelors degree from Harvard University.
Panelist: Kenny Mazursky, Gameslam, Co-founder and CMO
Kenny is Co-founder and CMO of GameSlam, the first mass multiplayer social sports game that allows fans to challenge their friends and play along with live sports events in real-time. Kenny is responsible for driving customer acquisition, engagement and distribution at Gameslam and heads up both the marketing and business development teams at the company. Kenny is an entrepreneur with 13-plus years of internet marketing experience. Prior to GameSlam Kenny ran his own internet marketing firm. For 10 years his company worked with a full spectrum of clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups. The company specialized in traffic generation, customer acquisition, social media, ecommerce, site analytics and optimization. Kenny began his career in sports marketing, quickly transitioning to the growing internet world where worked at Rollingstone.com and at Ignite Sports Media (now Sport Vision).
Panelist: Jon Brelig – Product Lead, Citizen Sports
Jon Brelig was the previous founder of Fantasy Book, which launched the first fully featured fantasy sports app on the Facebook platform shortly after it was released in 2007. In 2008, the company was acquired by Citizen Sports where Jon served as head of Fantasy Games. In 2010, Citizen was acquired by Yahoo! and today Jon serves a senior product role to enhance social and personalization across Yahoo! properties. Jon is also the founder and owner of SkiReport.com, a dominant web and mobile skiing destination. He holds a BS in Management Information Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.

Panelist: Jason Fulmines, Gannett, Director/Mobile Products
Jason is responsible for the strategy and development of mobile products across Gannett’s 100+ local newspaper and TV markets including USA TODAY. He also manages the day-to-day corporate relationship with multiple mobile providers and strategic partners. He evaluates emerging technologies and was a key member of the USA TODAY iPhone and iPad application development team. Prior to joining Gannett’s digital division, Jason worked for LM&O Advertising in Arlington, VA leading print and digital aspects of the Army National Guard’s account. He also spent four years at USA TODAY in various advertising roles. Jason is an international speaker and an active member of the Online Publishers Association and the Mobile Marketing Association. He holds a BA in Journalism/Mass Communication from St. Bonaventure University.
Panelist: Derek Peachey, Floodlight Digital, Managing Partner
Derek brings a decade of experience in mobile content and services to Floodlight. Most recently, Derek was SVP of Sales and Corporate Development at July Systems. Previously, Derek served as Director of Americas for Content Aggregation and Services at Nokia and built the channel partner business at Handango. Derek holds an MBA from TCU and a B.S. from Dickinson College.

Panelist: Scott Frederick StatSheet, Inc. Chief Operating Officer
Scott Frederick is the Chief Operating Officer of StatSheet, Inc. where he oversees the company’s strategy as well as their sales, marketing and business development initiatives. StatSheet is a digital media company that automatically transforms data into compelling narrative content (stories), visual displays (charts, tables, graphs) and interactive applications. StatSheet’s first vertical is sports.Prior to joining StatSheet, Scott was a venture capitalist for 13.5 years. Most recently, he was a Co-Founder and General Partner at Valhalla Partners (a firm with $440 million under management). Prior to co-founding Valhalla Partners in 2002, Scott was a Partner at FBR Technology Venture Partners ("FBRTVP”). Scott joined FBRTVP in 1997 as its second employee, and in doing so played a key role in the creation and management of one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s most successful venture capital funds. During Scott’s tenure, the FBRTVP funds produced seven IPOs, and FBRTVP I realized returns of approximately nine times invested capital. Scott is a former Director of the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association ("MAVA”) and co- founded the Young mid-Atlantic Venture Association ("YAVA”), serving as its first President and Chairman. Scott received a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1994 (cum laude) and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Duke University in 1991 (magna cum laude), where he was an A.B. Duke Scholar.
Panelist: Vishwas Prabhakara FanVibe, CEO
Vishwas Prabhakara is the Founder and CEO of Fanvibe, the leading interactive sports company on both computer and mobile platforms that allows fans to "check-in” to a game they are watching – either on TV or in-person – and chat with friends and other fans. Fans also win rewards in the form of virtual badges and real-world prizes from their favorite teams. In addition to being CEO, Vish leads business development, product and sales. Fanvibe has partnered with the NBA, Turner Digital, the NHL, and Comcast. Directly prior to founding Fanvibe, Vish worked in Business Development at Digg where he led efforts to partner with major media companies, including ABC/Disney, the Chicago Tribune and Current TV, among others. Vish also launched and managed mobile, search and RSS revenue streams. Vish was also Director, Finance & Strategy at ESPN, where he was on the senior management team for the company’s mobile efforts. In addition, Vish served on ESPN’s New Media Senior Staff and on the CFO’s Senior Staff. Prior to ESPN, Vish worked in Investment Banking, where he was responsible for day-to-day execution of IPOs and other financial transactions for companies such as Netgear and Jamdat. Vish earned a BS in Information Systems and Economics at Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Kevin Austin is the founder and architect of MyFantasyLeague.com, which first started offering fantasy football league management in 1995. In 2005, MyFantasyLeague.com became the first fantasy league management site to offer open access to league data in industry-standard XML format, allowing any third party developer to write applications to enhance the core product. To date, dozens of developers have created innovative applications using this developer’s program, offering products that include smartphone applications, draft and lineup advice tools, team rating tools, and more. MyFantasyLeague.com won the 2010 Fantasy Sports Trade Association "Most Valuable Fantasy Tool” award.
Panelist: David Geller, Yahoo, Head of Fantasy Sports
As Head of Fantasy Sports at Yahoo!, David Geller is responsible for overseeing one of the world’s largest fantasy sports providers. Prior to his current role, Geller managed Yahoo Music’s broadband partnership group and oversaw the integration of music technology services into products offered by AT&T, Verizon, British Telecom and Rogers Communications. Geller graduated with honors from the University of Michigan and earned an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management.
Panelist: Oren Michels, Mashery, CEO
As CEO and Co-founder of Mashery, Oren has led the team responsible for working with over 100 leading brands to power over 10,000 apps created by 50,000+ developers. Oren is a leading evangelist for the API movement in general and has pioneered and chaired the annual Business of APIs conference, now in its 5th year. A frequent speaker at events in both the US and Europe, Oren has taken the stage at events such as Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, Gluecon, the GCA/Savvian Summit, Digital Hollywood, eComm, WeMedia, Interop, Dow Jones Venturewire, CTIA,John Battelle’s Conversational Marketing Summit, and the Forbes CIO Summit. Prior to Mashery, Michels served in Executive roles for a number of successful startups including Feedster, WiFinder, Colt HR, and Winbid. He also served as President and CEO of The Groundlings, a Hollywood-based entertainment production company. Oren began his career as a software designer for Hughes Aircraft. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and an MBA in finance and entrepreneurial studies from UCLA’s Anderson School.

There’s a massive amount of social sports activity on Facebook. This is no surprise, sports are a fundamentally social type of media. Fan experiences — from cheering a big play, to playing fantasy sports — are better with friends. Looking at best practices from successful social games on Facebook, there are exciting opportunities for new, socially designed fantasy sports models to leverage the Facebook platform.

The Who and the Why: Demographics of Fantasy Players, and their Motivation to Participate
Presenter: Professor John Morgan, University of California, Berkeley
John Morgan is the Gary and Sherron Kalbach Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley. His research includes studies of the economics of the Internet, tournaments and contests, information flows within organizations, and auctions. His recent paper, "Tournaments for Ideas” received the Accenture Award for the best paper published in 2010 in California Management Review. In addition to top academic journals, his research has also been featured in The New York Times, Money, and The Economist magazines.
Morgan is the Founding Director of Xlab, Berkeley’s experimental social sciences lab. He is also Faculty Director of Executive Education at the Haas School. When not doing research, he is busy guiding his fantasy sports team, the Capybaras, to victories in fantasy baseball and football, where he has been active both as a player and as a commissioner for the last decade.
Presenter: Dana Sisak, University of California, Berkeley
Dana Sisak will soon join Erasmus Rotterdam University as an Assistant Professor. She is currently a visiting scholar at the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley. Sisak specializes in the theory of contest and tournament design. Her recent work "Multiple-Prize Contests – The Optimal Allocation of Prizes” published in the Journal of Economic Surveys, highlights how prize structures in contests affect the incentives of participants.
Presenter: Rob Phythian, Sports Data, LLC will present results of a recent IPSOS survey on consumer demographics.
4:45 P.M.What Drives Fantasy Sport Consumption
Moderator: Danielle MacLean, CBSSports
Presenter: Dae Hee Kwak, Assistant Professor of Sport Management, University of Michigan.
Dr. Kwak will present his recent studies on fantasy sport consumers. He will be discussing interesting findings from his research that explores how inflated winning perception drives fantasy sport consumption. In addition, he will share his recent study on the influence of marketer-controlled variables (e.g., level of customization, expert information, entry fees, and financial rewards) on consumers’ winning confidence and participation intention.
Dr. Kwak has been conducting numerous research projects involving fantasy sport consumers. Particularly, his primary focus is to better understand various decision making processes that drive the consumption of fantasy sport. His work has been published at various academic journals including Journal of Sport Management, International Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, and Sport Marketing Quarterly.
